Dr. Townsel returned to Tennessee in 2010 to become the Director of Psychology at Western Mental Health Institute. In 2011, she began her career in corrections as the Director of Mental Health overseeing mental health services provided to the incarcerated in the Shelby County Jails. In this position, Dr. Townsel educated correctional administration and staff on effective interventions and communication with mentally ill inmates. In 2013-2015, Dr. Townsel was appointed as the Health Services Administrator of the Shelby County Jails. She is currently the Regional Operations Manager for seven jails in Tennessee and the New Orleans jail. Her primary responsibility is leadership development of jail medical administration.
Motivated by the obvious lack of psychological resources in the criminal justice system and communities, Dr. Townsel established Calyx Psychological Services in 2016 to meet the needs of the community and to continue educating and reducing the stigma of mental illness. Dr. Townsel’s philosophy for treatment incorporates the healing of the mind, body, and spirit. She is a frequently requested speaker at local and national conferences and seminars. She also provides leadership coaching, professional development, strategic planning, and program development for individuals and private companies and organizations.
